Coleção Ictiológica da Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará

The Collection's laboratory is located in the Tapajós campus of the Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará, in Santarém. The collection has a scientific collection with more than 1,200 lots already cataloged and about 2,000 lots in the process of being cataloged. The vast majority of the specimens are from rivers and streams from the lower portion of the Tapajós river basin and the Calha Norte region of Pará. The didactic collection includes about 50 representative lots of different groups of fish inhabiting the rivers of the western region of Pará. The studies currently developed in the laboratory are mainly directed at the knowledge of fish biodiversity in the western region of Pará. Recent research, with the participation of students, has allowed the recognition of at least ten species still unknown to science, which are in the process of being formally described.
